Vellum: Private Diary ("Vellum," "the app") is a personal journaling app. This policy explains what the app does and does not do with your information. It is short because the app is built so that there is very little to say.
Vellum does not collect, transmit, or share any personal data. The app has no ability to connect to the internet: it does not request network permissions, and it contains no analytics, advertising, tracking, or crash-reporting services. Everything you write stays on your device.
Your diary entries and settings are stored only on your device, inside an encrypted database. Entries are encrypted using AES-256 encryption. The encryption key is generated randomly on your device, is never stored in readable form, and is protected by the PIN you choose, by a twelve-word recovery phrase shown to you during setup, and optionally by your device's biometric unlock. None of this information is ever sent off your device. Your entries, your PIN, your recovery phrase, and your keys all stay on your device, because the app cannot open a network connection.
None. Vellum does not collect names, email addresses, location, contacts, usage analytics, advertising identifiers, or any other personal or device information. The app does not create an account and does not require you to provide any personal information to use it.
None. Because the app collects nothing and cannot access the internet, there is nothing to share and no third party to share it with. Vellum contains no third-party SDKs for analytics, advertising, or crash reporting.
Vellum requests only a small set of device permissions, all optional to the core experience and none of which involve the internet:
The app declares no internet or network permissions of any kind.
If you choose to export a backup, the backup file is encrypted with a key derived from your recovery phrase. You control where that file goes. Vellum does not upload backups anywhere; exporting and storing a backup is entirely under your control.
You can permanently delete everything at any time from within the app, under Settings > Erase everything, which destroys the encryption keys and the database on your device. Uninstalling the app also removes its data from your device.
Vellum is intended for a general audience aged 18 and over. Because the app collects no personal information from anyone, it collects none from children.
